| The ULA Monday Report! This week's report by Jeff Potter Who is "Jimmy Grace"? The Outing of a Demi-Puppet Part One of a two-part report by Jeff Potter and King Wenclas "Jimmy Grace" is someone who posts at King Wenclas's blog. He likes to dis the ULA's noise-making approach and declares his contentment with his "just make art" method. He admits that most establishment art is bad, says that everyone knows it, so why bother? But he keeps declaring that our approach is nutty, pointless, etc. He says he's a visual artist who hangs out with a group from Oakland, CA. He says he's online and uses the name "Jimmy Grace" and the group's name is "Arms Akimbo" and that he has written books, but won't tell us who he is. Only that it doesn't matter and that he's not hiding, but that he doesn't want us pestering him like we do. He can't give an example of this other than that we criticize work, praising or slamming as we see fit. I like to think we give reasons for our position far more conscientiously than our enemies do about work we like. I suppose he just doesn't want to know what we think of his work. He doesn't mind what others think, because, well, he's an artist and writer and his work is out there. For everyone but us. Well, it turns out that there's no "Jimmy Grace" to be found online, no "Arms Akimbo" either. So he's a standard anonymous ghost ULA-attacker. It makes us wonder if any part of him was real. Where's he coming from? He says he "just does his art" but is there a reason why? Is he tied into some scene already, comfy, no need for outreach or noise? "Grace" mentioned that he was doing a popular queer sex art tour. Fine, but to me that's a niche-market, hobby-style small-world success of the kind that society hands over freely to indy artists every day. That explained his contentment. But the ULA is breaking into the next level up. We're exploring and exposing it. "Just do your art" works at the small-world indy level. But something happens when you get to the big show, the big media, the big cultural discussion. At that point only fakery seems to be allowed. People are allowed to corner the scene on speaking for America in general who have no relation to it. And it seems like a change that has happened over the last 30 years. Sure, there are exceptions but challenging the main trend isn't allowed. Not even when it's constantly done in terms of specifics, with examples of outright corruption. Why the omerta? ...TO BE CONTINUED! Check in next week as Jeff and King reveal a likely suspect behind Outrageous Anonymouse "Jimmy Grace." Meanwhile, follow the discussion on the King Wenclas literary blog. =============================================== Jeff Potter runs OYB books and is the ULA's Marketing Director. =============================================== GO HERE TO ENTER THE MONDAY REPORT BOX. |
