A Letter to the ULA:

Notes on Harold Humes & the Paris
Review
plus John Lennon & the CIA

Thanks for letting me see ULA - really GREAT! Very
pleased to see your generation carrying on the GOOD
FIGHT (for the people)!

I've only just touched the tip of ULA's current efforts -
particularly about '
being right about the Paris Review'.

I'd like a 'report' about the PBS docu soon to be broadcast
about HAROLD HUMES. As a matter of fact, I would like
to take the 'credit' for having INVENTED Harold Humes!
He came to visit me on the Left Bank soon after I released
the first issue of ZERO (may rag from Paris after WW2) in
January of 1949. As a matter of fact he visited me a
number of times - buying plenty of 'expensive drinks' to
show his appreciation of what I (and my mate Asa
Benveniste) were up to. Not long after these visits a NEW
review began to appear in Paris from the RIGHT BANK
called THE PARIS REVIEW! Oh? Yeah! It was indeed
from the one and same HAROLD HUMES who met me for
'talks'.

Almost a decade and a half later (spring 1963) I returned
to live in London (from Rome where I had made my first
and only short and feature films) and Asa said 'Harold
Humes is looking for you'. This time HH was ensconced
in fancy digs in Chelsea (and this time with a wife and
kids) and needed to put me in contact with a young 19-y-o
UK poet (who he knew I would want to publish) named
David Chapman - who had his own little poetry magazine
called THE IRON FLUTE. This was HH's way of thanking
me for inspiring him to launch the Paris Review way back
when. Dig?

Turns out I DID publish David Chapman. (His 'name' I
believe was later truncated by the CIA as a 'cover' for the
bloke - Mark David Chapman - who ended up
assassinating my friend John Lennon by USA spooks). The
book I published by David Chapman was called
WITHDRAWAL (1964) - paid for by one of my 'patron
friends' - the Rt. Hon. Jonathan Guinness. More about
DV's book soon in my
on-going website FIBA.

ULA Editor's Notes:

1) The entire John Lennon article can be read at the link below:

2) Mark David Chapman was born in 1955.
